Slap it on wrong and well, we've all seen what bad make-up look likes, no description needed. What can make the difference? Blending. Blending takes you from uneven splotches of color to fine and soft shadows. And expert blending means having the right brushes.

It's worth it to invest in good quality brushes. With good care, brushes can last a long time. You actually can wash them with gentle shampoo, rinse well and lay them flat until they dry. The better the brushes are made, the less likely they are to spill hairs, poke you, and the more effectively they will apply your cosmetics.

1. A Round Blush Brush

This is a nice, full and round (not too flat) brush that you can use for your blush and bronzer. You'll want to pay attention to the feel of this brush when you pick it, as it'll be sweeping across the delicate apples of your cheeks. You'll most likely want to pick a brush with natural hairs for this, as it'll grab the pigments of the make-up more effectively.

2. A Big Powder Brush

Whether you're trying to combat a shiny face or perfecting your black-tie affair look, this classic, powder brush is indispensable. Use it for loose or pressed powder, or you can also use it to bronze areas like your neck and d�colletage � even dust your shoulders. Try Sephora's Pro Powder Brush #50 ($40), which has a weighted handle for ease of application.

3. Medium Rounded Eye Shadow Brush

There are dozens of these sorts of eye-shadow brushes to choose from. But the one you want is a good medium-sized rounded one, made of natural fibers. In the same vein as the blush brush, the natural hairs are going to pick up the pigments of the color a lot better than a synthetic brush

The rounded tip is a good choice for general purpose blending, rather than a square tip, which would be more about creating angles. (But if you use cream shadows more, I would opt to use disposable sponge applicators or your finger.)

4. A Small Eyeliner Brush

What would we do without eyeliner? It takes you from plain to bombshell in oh, about an inch. You want a small eyeliner brush, but not the tiniest, to give you the freedom to do both cream/liquid and powder lines. You could also use it to line your lips. So it's a triple threat! 5. A Brow Brush

How to Develop a Signature Look

How many times have you looked at your closet full of clothes and feel that you didn't have a thing to wear? It happens to even the best fashionistas from time to time. And when it does, the smart ones know to rely on their signature look. A signature look doesn't mean an exact outfit that you repeat from head-to-toe, day-to-day, but rather serves as a guideline to your own personal style. Here are a few that will get you through the week:

Career Woman

Very few offices these days require you to copy the guys' uniform of a suit and tie. Instead, opt for a more feminine version of a power suit: a knee-length, A-line or sheath dress (tailored but not too fitted) with a pair of pumps. You can make it your own by adding colorful skinny belts, chunky necklaces and experimenting with different fabrics and prints. A word of caution: large floral prints and polka dots can come across as juvenile, so steer clear of these.

Girl About Town

There's a reason skinny jeans have been in style for years, because they're comfy, versatile and flatter just about everyone. Top with a blousy, boho style peasant top, an oversized sweater or a tunic. Pair with slouchy boots or strappy sandals, depending on the weather. While dark jeans and a dark top are a natural combo, that doesn't mean you always have to reach for black. Find a signature color such as cobalt blue, fuchsia, or red, and buy tops and accessories in that same color family. (Keep the jeans dark for a more slimming silhouette.)

Busy Mom

While the temptation is great to reach for a favorite hoodie and pair of sweats when you're trying to get the kids dressed and out the door, give your wardrobe an upgrade. Opt for black yoga pants and soft, drapey, open front cardigans and invest in a stylish pair of ballet flats. They're not only more flattering than sneakers, they're easier to put on, too, saving you precious seconds on a busy morning.

Night Out

When it comes to nighttime gear, most women favor one of two looks: A favorite pair of fitted boot cut jeans with a sexy top or an attention-getting dress. Decide which camp you're in and own it. If you're the jeans and top kind of girl, look for dark-wash denim, which is more flattering, and more sophisticated for evening. When it comes to your top, try to show off one body part. Ladies with great shoulders do well in one-shoulder tops; set off a sexy low-neck line in a low cut blouse; or show off toned triceps in a sleeveless tank.

If you're a dress girl, find the most flattering silhouette and stick with it. Flaunt great legs in a mini, set off an hourglass figure in a body-skimming dress or brag about all those hours in Pilates class with a backless style.

Weekend Warrior

Casual shouldn't ever mean sloppy. Ditch that jeans and t-shirt you wear to run errands and trade it in for a more feminine look. A crisp shirtdress is always right look for one that's at least knee length so you can still be mobile. In cooler months, layer with a vest and nipped-waist jacket. In warmer ones, add a pair of flat sandals. An over-sized, cross-body bag with plenty of room for your wallet, keys, phone and small purchases completes the look.
